  1. It's sad to see these buildings with such a deep history with the local people having to be demolished with no real reason or justification. I am not a true local myself, having living in Pembroke Dock for fifteen years after marrying a local Pembroke Dock girl, but the history of this place always fascinates me even if the majority of it is somewhat missing over the years with the shipyard, abundance of shops, pubs etc.

One comment i will make about the future of the old Pennar school is that whilst it is good to protest the demolition of the building, there needs to be a justification over why it should be saved. such examples are converting it into a visitor centre, using it for local needs (youth centre, learning centre etc) or even applying for listed status.

I'm sure there are ideas already in the pipeline to save the old school as best as possible. As someone who comes the city, i have had experience where a whole community has been devastated by where the history that they grew up in was all but demolished in the 90's to make way for high rise flats, giant shopping centres and bypasses, which also increased crime and other related underground activities along with social problems, which i am sad to say (on the crime side of things) is happening at some other historical buildings of PD that have been converted to box rooms for maximum profit with no thought to the people who have to live near them. this is what will happen if the old school is demolished.

I hope the old school is saved not just for the people of PD, but for the historical memories that the building contains. Best of luck, and if this protest is a success, continue to do it for other buildings that hold a deep memory of the local people of Pembroke dock, once it's gone, there's no turning back.

  2. Anonymous, you have "Hit the Nail on the Head". What to do with the place? I am sure that there is scope for making further use of the place. An energetic group are making huge efforts to revive the Church Hall on the other side of the road, and this property is a good adjunct to that. It is important that whoever takes it on has credibility - and it will have to be a group of like minded people - the credibility to leave behind the self seeking attitudes of those who sabotaged the massive spending allocated to PD under the THI and other grant funding bodies. I am sure that ideas will be forthcoming as to what the old school may be used for, but I shall leave that for a future post on the blog.
