Old Pennar School - Requiem to Mr Isaac Hughes, builder

I have tried to find out a little more about the builder who built Old Pennar School in about 1872/3.

He was a Mr Isaac Hughes, who when he died in 1874, lived in Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.

The witnesses to his will were Michael Morgan Builder of Pembroke Dock and Isaac Cadogan, Stonemason, of Pembroke Dock. He left everything to his wife.

In 1861, Isaac, a joiner who hailed from Reynoldston, shared a house with another joiner at 15(?) Lewis Street. Ten years later he was living with his wife Mary, his four children and a servant in Gwyther Street, probably at 1 Gwyther Street South, because that is where his widow and 5 children, were living in 1881. His eldest child, Elizabeth, who would have been 19 years old in 1881, no longer lived at the address.

Isaac was about 36 years old when he died. He wrote his will on 9 April 1874 and died on 20 April, 11 days later.

The Board School in Pennar opened in 1873, the year before Isaac died. An oft quoted memorial (I am sure that someone can tell me where it originated) is particularly apt in Isaac's case. If you stand in the playground, between the two wings of Old Pennar School, as the swifts scream their requiem over your head.......

"If you seek his memorial, just look around you"

  1. ISAAC HUGHES the Pembroke Dock builder. His father John was a brother to my 2 x great grandfather Alexander Hughes.

ISAAC HUGHES parents were John Hughes (bapt in Begelly on 8 May 1808) and Elizabeth Prees, the daughter of Richard Prees of Reynalton. She was born on 28 May 1811 and baptised in Reynalton on 2 June 1811.
In 1841 parents John & Elizabeth were living at Hare Steps, Reynalton with youngest son John aged 11 months but their son’s Richard & ISAAC appear to be living with their widowed grandfather Richard Prees just a few doors away. Father John died later that year & was buried on 9 November 1841 in Reynalton aged 38 years, baby son John died just three weeks later. I do not know if Richard & Isaac went back to live with their mother Elizabeth. Elizabeth married again on 30 April 1844 in Reynalton Church to Isaac Lewis from Yerbeston whose father was William Lewis, a collier.
The 1851 census states that Elizabeth and Isaac Lewis went on to have two son’s and a daughter.

ISAAC was baptised in Reynalton on 7 January 1838. He married Mary Morgan in the September qt 1861 which was registered in Pembroke. Mary was b.c1837 in Milford Haven. They can be found in Gwyther Street, Pembroke Dock in 1871 with children Elizabeth, Louisa, George R and Emily A. Issac was a house builder and joiner. In 1881 Mary was a widow living at 54 Gwyther Street, there are two additional children with her – Isaac M and Ernest J. Mary also has an annual income and there is a female servant living with them, which would indicate that Mary had money. ISAAC died aged 37 in the June quarter of 1874, the death was registered in Pembroke. Mary and her three sons had moved from Gwyther Street by 1891 and can then be found living in Paddington, London, at 9 Westbourne Park Villas, were the sons gave their professions as railway clerks. Mary’s brother, Michael Morgan a shipwright was also at the house. Isaac and Mary had three sons and three daughters. Mary’s death was registered in Paddington in the June qt 1899 aged 61 years.

I had no idea that he built Pennar School

    1. Many thanks for this Janice. He also did some renovation work to St Mary's Church in Pembroke at around the same time.
